With no time to change, Cyrus did the only thing he could think of that might save Kyna. He took a couple of quick steps and sprang straight up into the floating head's face. |

The huge black head screamed, ''Stop!" |

Kyna and Paula had just enough time to relish the look of astonishment on the Dark Man's face before the image imploded in a flash of brilliant green light. The air cracked like lightning, and a blast of foul-smelling wind hurled Cyrus across the room. He crashed into the Mr. Coffee machine, rolled off the counter and landed with a thud on the floor. |

For several seconds the room was completely silent, but stank of ozone and open graves. Paula finally came to her senses and ran over to Cyrus. "What in the name of Hermes Trismegistus did you think you were doing?" |

He sat up, rolled his head around and pressed one hand into the small of his back. "Well, I can't actually say I thought about it. I knew I didn't have time to change, and besides, my wardrobe bills are killing me." |

Paula laughed with delight and shook her head. |

Kyna had collapsed into one of the chairs and was hanging her head between her knees. Cyrus climbed to his feet and began patting his chest, looking for a wound. |

"That was an incredibly brave and stupid thing to do," Paula said. Then she added, "But that energy beam couldn't really have hurt you. The only thing you have to worry about is a sword or the like." |

"Now you tell me." Cyrus sighed. Then he turned serious. |
